Up in smoke: Publisher pulls vaping paper nearly two years after complaint-- A study on vaping has been formally withdrawn by the publisher MDPI nearly two years after concerns were first raised about its methodology. One expert had previously criticized the research as appearing “almost like a joke,” citing significant flaws.
The paper, published in Neurology International in 2022, claimed that e-cigarette users faced a higher risk of early stroke compared to traditional tobacco users. Prior to its retraction, the study had been cited 22 times, indexed by Clarivate’s Web of Science database, and amplified through media coverage, public anti-vaping campaigns, and inclusion in a disputed meta-analysis.
